Pin back button with the image of Pope Leo XIII and the words "In Memoriam" on the front. Memorializing button was made and distributed by The Whitehead and Hoag Co, Newark, NJ. The advertisment inside the back of the pin is for W.F. Miller & Co, 134 Park Row, New York; W& H Co Patent, April 14. The bottom portion with the patent number and year are outside the circle but believe to be pre WWI based on the death of the Pope. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Whitehead & Hoag distributed many of their pin-backs in cigarette or gum packs. At this time it is unclear how this particular pinback was distributed.
FYI: Leo XIII was the oldest Pope who died in 1903 at the age of 93, and was the third longest ponitification of 25 years and 5 months.
